The Growing World of Sound – Why Discernment Matters

Updated: Jun 12

The Growth of Sound and Wellbeing

There has never been a more exciting time to be involved in the world of sound. Interest in Singing Bowls, Gongs, Sound Baths, Sound Massage and vibrational wellbeing practices has grown enormously over recent years, introducing more people to the calming and restorative qualities of sound. As someone who has spent many years studying, practising and teaching this work, there is an aspect that I find encouraging and exciting 🙏

When Growth Meets Hype Culture

At the same time, the rapid expansion of the sound space has created new challenges. As sound has become more mainstream, it has also become influenced by the same trends affecting many areas of the wellness industry. Social media, marketing and the demand for quick, digestible content have contributed to what could be described as a "hype culture" - one that often favours bold claims, instant results and simplified messages over depth, nuance and long-term learning.

This can make it increasingly difficult for people to navigate the sound world. Today, there are countless sound experiences, workshops, courses and training pathways available. While this accessibility is wonderful, it can sometimes create the impression that all sound experiences are the same. In reality, a Sound Bath, a musical performance, a meditation experience and a therapeutic sound treatment may all serve very different purposes. Each can be valuable, but they are not necessarily interchangeable.

One of the challenges of hype culture is that distinctions can become blurred. When everything is presented as transformational or life-changing, it becomes harder to understand the differences between relaxation, entertainment, personal exploration and therapeutic practice. The language can sometimes become bigger than the work itself. Yet much of the most meaningful sound work is often subtle. Rather than promising dramatic outcomes, it creates the conditions for relaxation, awareness, self-reflection and nervous system regulation. These experiences can be profound, but they are often deeply personal and unfold differently for each individual.

Sound, Science and Responsible Communication

As interest in sound continues to grow, so does the range of language and claims surrounding it. While emerging research is exploring the effects of sound, music and relaxation practices on wellbeing, stress regulation and quality of life, it is important to communicate with care and integrity. Sound experiences can be deeply meaningful and supportive, but they are not a replacement for medical treatment, diagnosis or guaranteed outcomes. Responsible practice means being clear about what is currently supported through experience and research, and remaining open, curious and respectful as the field continues to evolve.

The Rise of the "Instant Expert"

Alongside this, we are increasingly seeing what might be called an "instant expert" culture. It is now possible to purchase instruments, complete a short course and quickly begin teaching or offering services. While enthusiasm and passion are important, genuine expertise develops through years of study, practical experience, mentorship and ongoing professional development. This is why I believe it is important for both practitioners and participants to ask thoughtful questions about training, experience, ongoing education and the foundations that support the work being offered.

Why Training and Community Matter

This is one of the reasons I continue to value the Peter Hess® Method so deeply. Developed and refined over more than forty years, it is an experience-based and science-informed approach that emphasises structured learning, practical application and continued professional growth. The training itself is comprehensive, but what many people discover is that the pathway offers far more than a qualification ✨

One of the most beautiful aspects of the Peter Hess® community is the opportunity for ongoing learning and connection. Through workshops, retreats, advanced trainings, mentorship and international networks, practitioners continue to grow long after their initial certification. Many of the most meaningful experiences in my own journey have come not only from the education itself, but from the relationships, conversations and shared experiences that have followed.

Looking Forward

As the sound world continues to grow, my hope is that we can celebrate both accessibility and integrity. There is room for artistic expression, relaxation experiences, personal exploration and therapeutic approaches. Each has its own value and place. What matters is that we communicate clearly about what we offer, continue learning, and approach this work with the respect and responsibility it deserves 🎶

The growing popularity of sound is something to celebrate. By balancing curiosity with discernment and enthusiasm with education, we can help ensure this field continues to grow in a meaningful and sustainable way for years to come.

In resonance,

Ute Coleman 🤍
